Elevated Engagement Session | Tripp & Lilly
If you’re wondering what to wear for engagement photos, Tripp and Lilly’s fall session is such a perfect example of how thoughtful outfit choices can completely elevate your images. Their engagement session at her grandparents’ home felt effortless, meaningful, and full of life; and a big part of that came down to how intentionally they chose what to wear.
If you’re planning your own engagement session, this is your reminder: what you wear plays such a big role in how your photos feel.

Choosing Your Engagement Session Outfits
When it comes to styling your session, I always recommend starting with one simple question: what do you want your photos to feel like?
Tripp and Lilly did this beautifully by choosing two distinct looks:
- one bold and elevated (structured blazer, rich tones)
- one soft and romantic (flowy dress, neutral palette)
Having both gives you variety in your gallery while still feeling cohesive.
Think through:
- bold vs. neutral
- dressy vs. casual
- classic vs. trendy
The goal is to choose pieces that reflect you, while also photographing in a timeless way.

What to Avoid When Choosing Outfits
A few small choices can make a big difference on camera. I typically recommend avoiding:
- busy patterns or logos
- overly bright or neon colors
- heavy, dark tones that pull attention away from your faces
Instead, lean into soft neutrals, warm tones, and textures that move naturally, especially for dresses.

Helping Your Groom Feel Comfortable
Let’s be honest, most grooms aren’t counting down the days for photos, but a little prep goes a long way.
The key is helping him feel confident and comfortable. Choose outfits that fit well, feel like him, and don’t require constant adjusting. Tripp’s looks were a perfect example of how you want your groom to look; polished, but still relaxed and natural.
Before your session, spend some time together scrolling through my Instagram or blog so he knows what to expect. This helps him feel more relaxed and confident going in.
I also recommend giving yourselves plenty of time to get there—nothing sets the tone like feeling rushed or stressed, and that energy will show in your photos.
And most importantly, have patience with him. Don’t assume he won’t enjoy it… I think you’ll both be surprised by how much fun you actually have. I’ll guide you both the entire time so nothing ever feels awkward or forced.

Why Thoughtful Styling Matters
Your engagement photos should feel like you natural, meaningful, and full of life. When you put a little extra thought into your outfits, it allows you to relax, be present, and truly enjoy the experience. The right outfits allows us to create images that you’ll back on in 20 years and still love what you wore.
And sessions like this one? They’re exactly why I love what I do.
